The price of food purchased for home use has increased 33% since the beginning of 2019. About 70 million people will face heat advisories. Forecasters say the heat will stretch from the desert southwest to the Gulf Coast and into the Midwest and Great Plains. Some areas, like the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, won't be hit by such severe weather. The elderly and children are especially at risk of heat-related illnesses. People are advised to seek air conditioning and stay hydrated. Relief might come to the central U.S. toward next weekend.</p>

Greg Abbott says a third person has been confirmed killed by catastrophic floods this month that prompted more than 500 rescues, damaged homes and businesses, and are still making some areas inaccessible. Abbott said Friday that a person was swept away after attempting to drive through floodwaters Monday. The governor on Friday flew over the city of Cotulla, about 90 miles southwest of San Antonio, to assess the damage of floodwaters he said have left some areas of the city still unreachable.</p>

Heavy rain into the evening may trigger isolated flash flooding. No deaths or significant damage have been reported since Bertha formed Monday in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm made landfall for the first time Wednesday as it grazed the Louisiana coast. It came ashore again Thursday near Galveston, Texas.</p>

Jul 23, 2026<p>Tropical Storm Bertha has made landfall in Louisiana. Early Thursday morning the storm was moving west toward Texas. The storm has been forecast to reach the upper Texas coast on Thursday before dissipating inland in Texas by Friday. Damaging winds and storm surges are the main threats for the Deep South states. The National Hurricane Center says a tropical storm warning includes New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Storm surges up to 3 feet are possible, as well as heavy rain. The storm earlier forced beach closures in the Florida Panhandle and along the tips of Alabama and Mississippi.</p>
